Apr 17th 2009 Cuba Announce Big Tourism Drive
Cuba has announced that it seriously wants to improve the number of visitors to the country over the coming years. It has been a strong tourist destination for a while now, but has seen a drop recently in European visitors and would like to regain these if possible. There was a jump in tourist levels last year from 2.15 million to 2.25million people, which was a likely result of good money being injected into tourist attractions and facilities. Cuba has also worked hard on its foreign diplomacy in recent years in attempts dispel outdated, potentially harmful impressions of the country that may put people off visiting on Cuba holidays
Maria Elana Lopez Reyes, the Deputy Tourism Minister has outlines that continuing to increase visitor numbers is a priority.Around 3000 new rooms are being built in hotels around key areas. It is hoped that by building facilities with higher standards and more a more diverse choice it will attract more visitors to the country. There has been development also in the luxury holidays market, as Cuba attempts to pull in holiday with more expensive tastes. The issue of American citizens not being able to travel legally into Cuba is something that Miss Lopez Reyes hopes will be addressed by the new White House administration. Although there are almost 50,000 people who make the trip from America to Cuba each year, many more would choose the location if they felt they could do it legally.
Cuba has also just been named as this years home for the first International Culinary Festival of the Caribbean. 25 food experts will come together from countries all across the region to discuss food ideas, recipes and philosophy. Teaching the importance of local food and maintaining cultural traditions is another intended goal of the festival. The event is being held in September in Santiago De Cuba towards the East of country and it is hoped that it will draw in visitors from all around the world.
