Apr 19th 2009 Vacations In Southport and Things To See And Do
During these difficult times many folk are having to seriously looking at their way of life and trying to reduce expenditure. One way some are saving is to have a vacation in Great Britain the reason being that the English pound has lost ground against other currencies and this means that foriegn vacations for those living in England are expensive than in previous decades and much less expensive for those visitors travelling from America and Europe. In the article below I introduce the reader to the seaside resort of Southport, in the North West of England.
Southport is a delectable seaside resort found on the English North West coast. Tourist attractions include, Southport Pier, Lord Street, Hesketh Park, the Botanic Gardens at Churchtown, Botanic Gardens Museum, Churchtown village, Wayfarers’ Arcade and more. Lord Street is Southport’s main street. All the way along one side of Lord Street the paving stones are covered by ornate Victorian iron work and a row of lush green trees closer to the road. On the opposite side of the road you are greeted with gorgeous flower beds and small gardens with pools and fountains plus a Victorian bandstand. Right in the heart of Lord Street is most likely the most grandiose war memorials in the United Kingdom with a centrally placed obelisk and two other memorials on each side which have huge columns. Some of the finest architecture in Southport is to be found along Lord Street and it is where you will discover Wayfarers’ Arcade, a covered shopping area.
At the end of Lord Street you will find Hesketh Park. Hesketh Park gets its name from the Hesketh family and, in a similar fashion to Lord Street, it is heavily wooded. There are beautiful hidden areas to be discovered, a play park, glass house, bandstand and more to be found within Hesketh Park but the lake is the most prominent feature.
Another wonderful park, the Botanic Gardens, are to be found in Churchtown which features a large area of water set out like a river featuring the usual ducks and swans plus a bridge and boating and if you enjoy birds and animals the park also has a small zoo, just opposite the cafe and museum. Churchtown village is a picturesque number of ancient cottages, fishermen’s cottages and houses the majority of which are white and some of them have a roof of thatch. It is crucial that you explore on foot and that you are not afraid to look down alleys because there are a small number of hidden places of interest well worth the work to discover.
Finding Southport bed and breakfast is easy with a wide selection of Southport hotels and guest houses able to take online bookings. There are guest houses and hotels suitable for all budgets and tastes from cheap and cheerful to luxurious in the centre of Southport or just outside.
