Apr 27th 2009 Reasons To Visit Germany – The Munich Oktoberfest

Germany is a massive country in more ways than one. Ok, it's not a big as the United States or Australia in physical size but it still ranks alongside them for things to do. You see Germany has a long history. Even though it may not have been known as Germany all the time, many of the towns and cities in the country go back over a 1000 years. So if you are planning a trip to Germany, you will not be scratching your head for things to do.

One of the first things you might think of doing ids to take in the beer festival in Munich. That's a pretty good shout at it has to one of the most original events you are likely to see on a vacation. Sure, plenty of other countries have exported the idea of a beer festival but nothing can quite top the original and best in Munich, in my opinion.

You will soon be mixing with some very happy and noisy Germans. I wonder why ? Possibly it is the vast quantity of the amber liquid that is quenched in a short amount of time. With this said it's more about the way it is consumed than anything else.

The festival grounds consist of many large beer halls or tents. There seems to be three important parts of each hall or tent. The first is a fast supply of beer, the second is music or some form of entertainment and the third is many large tables with benches. The table and benches where you drink beer make people sit together and help to break the ice with strangers. From my experiences of the festival you will soon make beer chugging pals. And due to the world famous nature of the festival you will meet many people from all over the world including one or two from your own country too.

The beer halls or tents are so popular that you have to get in early. If you are not well ensconced by about 10 am you may find it hard to get a place. After that it's some serious drinking with a bit a scran thrown into the mix. The best scran has to be the sausages – ordinary or white sausages (cheese). Ok, it's not haute cuisine but it goes down a treat with beer. You can also get staples of German cuisine like pretzels and sauerkraut.

There is plenty ot see and do in Germany and high on that list is the Munich beer festival. It's known as the Oktoberfest but begins around late September through to early October each year. If you are lucky enough to be in Munich around that time you owe it to yourself to spend a day drinking some beer. And once you've gotten over the hangover…there is plenty more to see and do in Munich.
