Apr 29th 2010 Antarctica’s Extraordinary Geographic Significance

Antarctica occupies one tenth of the land in the universe and is bigger than Europe. The continent’s enormously barren and formidable landscape can see minus 89 degrees Celsius temperatures and 192 mph winds. The Southern Ocean envelopes Antarctica. You will gain a deeper understanding about exciting travel to antarctica by checking out that resource.

The seas are blessed with the richest concentration of nutrition in the universe, sufficient to feed numerous whales, fish, etc. Micro forage, also known as krill, grown under the vast ice shelves of the region. Krill is one of the main foods for whales, seals and penguins and is even eaten by humans in Japan.

Because of the extreme cold, windy, and dry conditions, animals living in Antarctica must have special adaptations for the environment. Antarctica has the highest average elevation of all the continents, and it has an average precipitation of just 200mm a year on the coastline and much less further inland. Many animals have uniquely adapted to the cold, and thrive in Antarctica, penguins and seals among them; even more surprisingly, assorted tundra vegetation and several types of algae have adapted to the harsh climate as well.

Antarctica is still the most pristine and undisturbed area in the world. The greenhouse effect is more prevalent at the poles, as the heavier molecules in the atmosphere are clustered there. The sun produces radiant energy which is absorbed by the earth’s surface, the earth has begun absorbing more heat at the poles and as a result both the Arctic and Antarctica are becoming warmer. When you would like to get more information on antarctic travel check out this site.

The earth’s atmosphere is comprised of 21 percent oxygen, 79 percent nitrogen, Lesser amounts of methane and carbon dioxide are also there. These gasses trap the heat from the sun’s rays and make the ground warmer. Scientists call this the Greenhouse Effect.

The polar regions and the equator collect methane and carbon dioxide quicker than the moderate regions because of a condition known as the “slingshot effect”. Therefore, the temperature increase caused by the Greenhouse effect is nearly 4 to 5 times greater in the Antarctic region than any other place, making this continent essential for climate research.

The ice blanketing Antarctica is almost three miles deep. It is the formulation of centuries upon centuries of accumulated and compressed snowfall. Scientists study core samples by analyzing ancient air bubbles and atomic isotopes to better understand conditions in prehistoric eras.

The infamous hole in the ozone layer is caused by fluorocarbons released from refrigerants into the atmosphere interacting with ozone. These CFC’s destroy ozone. As the temperature rises in the Antarctic, immense shelves of ice “calve” into the sea creating new ice bergs.

Once broken off, the ice shelves move to the north and eventually melt in the warmer waters. This melting causes a rapid reduction of the polar icecaps and results in a corresponding rise in the level of the sea. In another adverse effect, the melting decreases the size of the krill’s breeding and feeding habitat.

It is estimated that the seas would rise over 180 feet if all the Antarctic ice melted. This could send rising to the 20th floor of skyscrapers in New York City! Whole countries close enough to sea level may vanish, places like the archipelagos of the South Pacific and Bangladesh.

Many who have traveled to Antarctica are of one accord in that the region is a vast area full of captivating and stunning splendor. The wildlife there has little to no fear of humans. With the astounding beauty of the nature and it’s innocent wildlife, it is a stimulating sight.

It is the hope of many that this world will remain intact, its beauty forever preserved for future generations. However, the destruction of this continent has been ongoing for a very long time, and irrevocable damage is being done to it. Numerous countries have come together to work on preserving what remains of Antarctica.
